National Wear Red Day

Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women in the United States, claiming more lives than all forms of cancer combined, and will become one of the leading causes of death in Africa by 2020 due to current health measures, diet and lifestyle trends.  For more than 10 years, the American Heart Association has sponsored National Wear Red Day® to raise awareness in the fight against heart disease in women.

Celebrate National Wear Red Day® with Go Red For Women on Friday, Feb. 7, 2014 to help fight heart disease in women. Join the movement worldwide.

The Patcha Foundation recommends the Life’s Simple 7, American Heart Association’s My Life Check campaign that advises people to adhere to seven factors for a healthy heart:

  • Being physically active
  • Keeping a healthy weight
  • Eating a healthy diet
  • Maintaining healthy cholesterol levels
  • Keeping blood pressure down
  • Regulating blood sugar levels
  • Not smoking

Adhering to six or seven of these factors reduced the risk of cancer by 51 percent, compared with participants who met none of the factors. Meeting four factors led to a 33 percent risk reduction and one or two 21 percent.
